What’s the closest thing in your room that has consciousness?
It’s you.
So, in order to understand consciousness, you are the best place to start.
Consciousness is a real-life game. This means that people who are good at feeling the insides of their bodies, who are good at feeling, who have gone through a lot of different states, are best at consciousness.
Consciousness is not a theoretical discussion. If somebody says things like "consciousness exists next to bodily sensations," you know that person has no clue.
Consiousness Is Learning
Let’s say you fall on the street and your knee is bleeding. When you get home, you experience pain. Some people talk about this process as if there is a ‘you’ and there is ‘pain.’ But that is not how it works: you are every inch of the pain. The pain is also inside you. You are also healing your own knee.
Your body explaining those processes is what you call consciousness. And see what I did? I said ‘your body’ as if there is a ‘you’ and ‘your body.’
But you are your whole body, the whole time. Every inch.
I like to see consciousness as distance: you distance yourself temporarily from your thoughts and feelings until they have explained to you that you are the whole thing simultaneously.
Or: imagine you are your liver. How does your liver explain to you that you are also your liver?
Drie concepten zijn belangrijk
Concept 1
Alles is continu.
Wij maken er discrete eenheden van. In andere woorden: je krijgt langzaam de griep, maar het voelt discreet.
Concept 2
